Jason Green
(back) Brief Biography
Jason Green teaches Ceramics and Sculpture at Walnut Hill School,
a high school for the arts, in Natick, MA. He was awarded an Individual
Artist Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2001.
He exhibits his work nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions
include the Invitational Exhibit of International Ceramics at the
Guangdong Shiwan Ceramic Museum in China, Tiles on the Edge at Pewabic
Pottery, Detroit, Mastery in Clay at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia
and Yankee Clay: Ceramic Artists of the Northeast at the Slater Museum
in Norwich, CT.
He recently travelled to China as a visiting artist at the Jingdezhen
Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute, and has also been a visiting artist
at Alfred University, Harvard University and MassArt.
Green began creating sculptural tile after several years of building
temporary architectural installations that were lined with unfired
clay. In 1999 he was invited to the Ceramic Millennium workshop "Beyond
Gravity: Ceramics in a Digital Culture" in The Netherlands.
The resulting installation "Transept", made in collaboration
with Denise Pelletier, continued to nourish his interest in sculptural
ideas that investigate site and refer to architecture. Summer residencies
in 1999 and 2000 at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, provided
him the time, space and environment to begin developing his current
body of artwork. At Watershed, which was once a functioning brick
factory, Green experimented with building sculpture using antiquated
molds once used for architectural elements. As his process evolved,
he began designing and fabricating his own molds using plaster and
wood components. At Watershed, he also discovered his technique of
transferring pattern to the surface of his pieces using slip and
embossed paper.
Using brick, tile and other fabricated architectural elements, combined
with decorative interior surfaces, Green investigates ideas dealing
with decoration, decay, construction and reconstruction. He intends
his patterned fragments to elicit questions and dialogue dealing
with the relationships between physical spaces, the body, time and
memory.
